Here’s what Yamaha say about the HS Series Active Studio Monitors

Following their introduction at Frankfurt Musikmesse 2013, the second generation of Yamaha’s HS Series of nearfield studio-quality powered monitors have proved extremely popular in professional and home studios the world over. Now the 3-strong full-range lineup – HS5, HS7 & HS8 – are all available in a stunning white finish!

The HS Series – completed with the HS8S 150w powered subwoofer – shares the same design philosophy as the legendary NS-10M Studio Monitors and the subsequent highly-acclaimed MSP range, and is specifically designed (and priced) for the project home studio market. However, as is to be expected from Yamaha – an acknowledged world leader in nearfield studio monitor design and innovation – the HS range can easily hold its own against far more expensive monitors.

Built to last with high-grade components, the powerful 2-way bi-amped HS5 (70w), HS7 (95w) and HS8 (120w) studio reference monitors are ideal for mixing and music production, delivering an exceptionally smooth, flat and – most importantly – accurate response.

To uphold their reputation for delivering exceptionally clear, natural and detailed sound, Yamaha engineers designed new transducers for the HS range and produced proprietary technology that reduces audible noise – often caused by air vibrations – by up to 6dB; yet another example of the brilliant blend of design, technology and materials that will satisfy even the most demanding of music producers. And now they get to choose between two splendid colours, too!

About Yamaha

We have new and used Yamaha musical equipment available on our website for fast direct delivery from sellers across the UK & Europe.

Yamaha is a giant in the world of synthesizers, having shaped the industry with iconic instruments since the 1970s. One of their earliest and most groundbreaking entries was the **Yamaha CS Series**, including the **CS-80**, which became famous for its expressive analogue sound and polyphonic capabilities. However, it was the launch of the **DX7** in 1983 that truly revolutionised music. The DX7, based on FM synthesis, offered a digital alternative to traditional analogue synths, providing crystal-clear sounds that became defining elements of 1980s pop, rock, and electronic music. Its affordability, reliability, and MIDI compatibility made it a favourite among professionals and amateurs alike.

Building on this legacy, Yamaha has continued to innovate with instruments like the **Motif Series**, combining sampling, synthesis, and sequencing in one powerful workstation. Their **Reface Series**, introduced in 2015, brought classic sounds back in compact, portable form, appealing to both new musicians and vintage enthusiasts. Throughout the years, Yamaha has maintained a reputation for quality, versatility, and innovation, producing synthesizers that are equally at home in professional studios and live performances.

Recording Equipment

Studio

Any equipment destined for the studio is going to be a high-quality instrument designed specifically for use in a studio environment, focusing on in-depth sound design and versatile sound creation. These synthesisers are equipped with powerful sound engines and extensive modulation options, allowing for a wide variety of synthesis methods such as subtractive, FM, wavetable, and granular synthesis. Studio synths prioritise programmability, enabling sound designers and producers to craft unique sounds and textures for various projects, including music recordings, film scores, and game soundtracks.

Unlike portable or compact synths, studio synthesisers often feature a larger form factor, complete with full-sized keyboards, high-quality encoders, sliders, and detailed user interfaces with large displays. They are designed for seamless integration into studio setups, offering multiple inputs, outputs, and MIDI/USB connectivity, as well as DAW control features. Examples include the Nord Lead, Moog One, Korg Prologue, and Roland Jupiter-X, which provide rich features like multi-timbral layers, built-in effects, and advanced sequencing capabilities. Overall, a studio synth is an essential tool for serious producers seeking maximum control and flexibility in their sound design and music production process.
